I read D Rus alterworld series. So when I heard he had a new series coming out I was really excited. Now full disclosure D Rus sent me a copy early to review. I still bought my kindle copy because I like to support things I enjoy. Now to the review. You just have to get through the first couple of chapters. He is world building basically three worlds. It takes some time to get everything framed properly. Unlike the fantasy novels where we can fill in the gaps easily enough here he is trying to explain some very unique worlds. So the first chapters feel rushed he has a lot of ground to cover and does so in an alright manner. It's not terrific but it does get the job done.
Now after the first three or so chapters we get into the meat of the story. Here it feels closer to alterworld which is a great series. You have the growing character development. Plenty of action, a decent amount of humor, and much smoother story telling. This continues through the end of the novel and so while the beginning is rough, he does hit a comfortable groove and carries most of the story and ends it well enough. I say well enough because it is the start of a series. So while not a cliff hanger per se you are left wanting more and looking forward to the next novel in the series.
Now if you are new a couple of things to be aware off. One the author is Russian, the story is set sorta in Russia, and the characters tend to be Russians. Also his characters tend to have military backgrounds. Now in the other stories he used translators. In this one it does feel like he was going alone, so as another reviewer mentioned some of the idioms are not what as an American I am use to hearing. Also if you are new to rpglit understand this isn't the sci-fi you are use to. There is a decent amount of gaming conventions sprinkled on top of the story. Characters have abilities, they level, they get achievements all as you would if you were playing a rpg/ video game.
So I would highly recommend this novel and if you are interested in a great fantasy series also look into his alterworld series.
Enjoy.

The Cadet LitRPG Squadcom13 Book1 Volume 1 D Rus 9781540623126 Books Reviews
I gave this a 5 star beacuse its a great opening story which sets the tone for the series. The protagonist was well thought out and made me think what would i do if that was me. I would recommend this to anyone that is new or returning veteran to the litrpg series or even if u like military fiction was a nice blend of both. Looking forward to seeing were this will go
The authors poor descriptions and/or word choice broke me out of the story on too many occasions for me to enjoy the tale. It has a feeling of learning back story through second hand sources, which left me feeling that there were many inconsistencies and a lot of disorganization. On the plus side the final battle was good.
It was an okay book, but I couldn't help but feel stuff was missing. It just seemed that the pace jumped around a lot. On one page the book is talking about getting gifts from aliens and then a few pages later the MC is waking up on a military ship. It wasn't even an explanation. The MC and his associates wake up not understanding what's going on multiple times and sp did I as a reader.
The good the world feels as harsh as seems to be intended. Also the beginning adventure has the feel of an AD&D module, with very good pacing. Was surprisingly enjoyable when the interact with the external world without realizing it.
The bad this is more in opportunity costs than true loss of of enjoyment — since I enjoyed it all.. but the last 10 percent of the book could have been a book in its own right, or at the least an additional 200 pages.. defeating the other groups that are still playing the game, a final showdown with the aristos, dealing with different formations of enemy worms etc, gathering strength as more groups are taken over in an alliance.. perhaps they are still doing all of that.. but my impression is that they are moving forward. Also need to know the part the new tech will play in the future — soul capture, particle transmission, etc. feels under appreciated..
Extra the brutal reality of male female relations has the feeling of the old gor fantasy books — kinda fun to play in that.. setting.. a little.
great book. Yes the English translation is a bit rough and while that does occasionally necessitate a mental pause to get things straight, it is by no means so bad as to make the book enjoyable.
On the down side the majority this book primary serves as world building and character introduction and the second book does not yet seem to be available in English.
There is story, action, drama, but all of it primarily serves to define the benefits and limitations of the world and set things up to move foreword. If you only want simple action in an easy to relate to world, or cannot handle waiting for when/if the other books come out you may want to pass/wait on this one.
Personally, I really enjoyed it and read it straight through in one siting.
Not quite 3 stars, but not 2 either.
I LOVE the series Alterworld, one of top ranking LitRPG books/series in my list. BUT..
Squadcom.. how should summ it up.. it's not quite LitRPG. I mean, the book could just as well be pure sci-fi with some modifications to story mechanics. Also, unlike Alterworld series, virtual abilities and scores serve no meaningfull purpose and play almost no role in the story.
The fact that the author is Russian and has somewhat different opinions and values - it took me a while to get over it. Count this in before opening the book. Also, this time he wrote without translator and you will run into some typos and such.
To conclude, I'm not quite sure that I'll go on with this series, but I wish the author all the best with his writing. He already proved to me that he could come up with great ideas and story.
